Posting social media content across different platforms has become quite the challenging task.

Each platform has different size requirements, different rules and, to add to the complexity, these things change often. Posting to social media in the most optimal way with the best assets for each platform requires some detective work to keep up to date with resolutions and the contexts in which your media will be shown.

To make this easier, we've done the work for you and updated our Social Media Image templates for 2020. This resource makes it quick and easy to make a post, cover or profile image for five major platforms; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram & Pinterest. The templates are available for both Photoshop, Sketch and (as a new thing) Figma. Oh, and they're 100% free.

How to make better social media images

Now that you have gotten the template (because you have gotten it right?), here's some quick tips to get the most out of this template.

The first thing you need to do, is find out what platforms you want to be posting on. Each platform presents content in different ways and it'll take a bit of research to understand the pros and cons of each platform and how to most effectively get your message across. Try looking at what other creators post on the different platforms to get a feel for what type of content it caters to and how the media is presented in timelines and on user profiles.

When it comes to posting images on each social network, it quickly gets complicated. Here's some important platform resolutions for content that we're always googling:

  • Facebook Image Post: 1200x630 px
  • Twitter Image Posts: 1024x512 px
  • LinkedIn Image Post: 1200x1200 px
  • Instagram Image Post: 1080x1080 px
  • Pinterest Standard Pin: 600x900 px

Those are the standard image sizes that each platform optimise for. Most will let you upload other sizes, but these are the right sizes as defined by each platform as of this writing. A lot of people don't realise the huge difference in aspect ratios. Notice how twitter is 1:2 while Instagram is 1:1. You're going to need to create a modular design that can be customised for each platform and that's where this template comes in handy.

The template covers all of these plus additional types of content like link posts and ad posts. Essentially this single file makes it much easier to design for each platform optimally and takes away a lot of the detective work involved in producing assets for social media sharing.

As we said last year, this is still a work in progress, and we strive to update the template a leats once a year, expanding with more platforms. Here’s what the current download includes:

  • Exact Social Media Image sizes of Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram and Pinterest
  • Supports various content, like posts, cover shots & profile pictures
  • One-click export actions
